Durable floating rafts as a foundation for growth at DeGoede Farms

background

DeGoede Farms in Sumner, Washington transitioned from NFT to water-based cultivation using floating rafts. Together with the specialists of Meteor Systems, a Deep Flow Technique (DFT) growing system was designed.

In 2016, father and son DeGoede started a trial growing leafy greens and herbs using Nutrient Film Technique (NFT), where a shallow flow of water passes along the exposed roots of plants in watertight gutters or on growing tables.

In 2021, they moved to Deep Flow Technique (DFT), aiming for faster harvest cycles through shorter growing periods, labour savings through efficient handling of the rafts, and improved crop quality.

Flexible growing with durable floating rafts

The DFT system was developed in close cooperation with Meteor Systems, using Meteor Hydroponic Floating Rafts. Ben DeGoede: “We see clear advantages in the material of the Meteor rafts compared to traditional foam boards. The rafts have a longer lifespan because they are easier to clean and there is less risk of algae growth. They are available in different sizes and planting densities, which gives us flexibility to grow a range of crops. In addition, the investment level is relatively low, making it an economically attractive solution.”

Practical solutions and close involvement

Ben DeGoede about Meteor Systems: “We didn’t know Meteor Systems very well at first, but started coming across them more often through other growers and at trade shows. During the collaboration, it quickly became clear that they really think along with you. Ideas are not only discussed, but also translated into practical solutions that work. That combination of practical knowledge and involvement makes the difference for us.”
