Shortly after acquiring Duijvestijn Tomaten in Pijnacker, The Flavour Farm carried out a thorough renovation of one of the two greenhouses at this location. Meteor Systems removed the old growing gutters and installed a new growing gutter system with drip irrigation.

“At first you can patch up the gutters. In the end, replacement is the best option,” says Gert van Straalen, CEO of The Flavour Farm. After years of intensive use, small leaks develop in growing gutters. “If a few drops of water leak out in the same spot all day long, you get wet patches. That is unsafe, it encourages disease and it can cause subsidence.”

Meteor Systems carried out the replacement in the 5 hectare greenhouse. Within one week we removed and disposed of the old growing gutters and roll formed more than 33 kilometres of GM-07 plateau gutter on site. The old growing gutters had also been supplied by Meteor Systems, twenty years earlier.

After ten years of use, the drippers were also due for replacement. Along with the new growing gutters, we supplied a pre-assembled irrigation system with Sunblock drip hoses and Supertif drippers. “With this new system, water delivery is accurate again, so the crop develops evenly,” says Van Straalen.

The existing gutter suspension was still in good condition and has been reused. On every replacement project, we check which components are still good enough, rather than replacing everything as standard.

The Flavour Farm

The Flavour Farm has been growing tomatoes in high-tech greenhouses since 2022, with local production using as little fossil fuel as possible as its starting point. In 2023 the company acquired Duijvestijn Tomaten in Pijnacker, where geothermal energy, solar panels, double screens, dehumidification and LED lighting keep fossil fuel use to a minimum. The Dinteloord location grows premium tomatoes such as Red Desire and the mini truss tomato Vitalion.

The company also looks after its workforce. Autonomous harvest trolleys drive to the processing area on their own, so staff no longer have to push heavy trolleys through the greenhouse. The Flavour Farm is also taking part in trials with harvesting robots.
