Maximizing efficiency with hoistable gutter system at Dutch Berries
In its latest greenhouse expansions, Dutch Berries focuses on maximizing the use of space and light. In two phases, a total of 8 hectares of strawberry greenhouse production was developed. For this project, we designed and delivered a hoistable gutter system with 10 growing gutters per 8-metre bay.
“To serve our customers and retain our workforce, we aim to be in production almost year-round,” says Boudewijn van der Wal, Director of Dutch Berries. “Our goal is to produce efficiently, at scale, and sustainably.
To achieve the highest possible yield per square metre, increasing plant density is key. Together with Erik van Nieuwenhuijzen from Meteor Systems, we developed a hoistable gutter system for this greenhouse expansion.”
From 8 to 10 gutters per bay
In the new greenhouse, with a bay width of 8 metres, 10 growing gutters are installed per bay, spaced 80 centimetres apart. In harvesting position, the gutters are alternately raised and lowered. Each gutter acts as a counterweight to the next, resulting in minimal mechanical load on the system.
In resting position, all gutters are aligned at the same height to maximize light distribution. “If you look at the ground, you will see almost no sunlight reaching it in this setup. That means the light is fully captured by the crop.”
20% higher yield
Independent trials with hoistable gutter systems have shown yield increases of over 20% due to higher plant density. “Our own experience confirms this,” says Van der Wal. “The return in a crop with supplemental lighting is clear: with the same energy input and greenhouse area, you achieve higher production.
It is important to keep the crop compact so the trusses do not become entangled. We grow the everbearing variety Lady Emma here, and we keep the gutters in resting position as long as possible to limit shading.”
A strong partnership
Dutch Berries has been working with Meteor Systems since its first greenhouse conversion and now operates a total of 34 hectares. “The collaboration has always been very positive,” Van der Wal explains. “Erik and Sebastiaan truly think along with us. They are not focused on quick sales.
Thanks to their knowledge and experience in strawberry cultivation, they are valuable sparring partners. That is very important to us. We are also very satisfied with the quality and delivery of the growing systems.”
