While work is still ongoing on the sorting and packing line in the facility building, the first tomatoes are already colouring in the new greenhouse. The Primato team is preparing for the first harvest in their brand-new 12-hectare greenhouse.

With this new greenhouse, named “De Plassen”, tomato grower Primato doubled its acreage in Putte, Belgium in 2025. For this expansion, Meteor Systems supplied the complete growing system: over 73 kilometres of GM-07HD suspended growing gutters with MS-150 coating, including turn around brackets, stem supports and drain water collection.

“In 2015, owners Kevin, Chelsey and Colin Pittoors built a 6-hectare greenhouse for tomatoes, which was doubled in 2017,” says Trui Kerkaert, crop manager of the new greenhouse. “A few years after the construction of greenhouse 1 and 2, the opportunity arose to expand further. That led to the recent realisation of ‘De Plassen’.

Hygiene and virus prevention at the core

The two 12-hectare greenhouses only share the access road. For reasons of hygiene, virus prevention and efficiency, they operate as two completely separate businesses. "We do everything we can to prevent virus infections.”

For this reason, the growers chose the premium MS-150 coating for the growing gutters. “We carry out intensive cleaning during crop changes and want the gutters to remain smooth and easy to clean for as long as possible. This coating guarantees that for many years.”

Complex project with tight deadlines

Just two months after planting, the first tomatoes are already colouring, and Kerkaert looks back on an intensive but successful process. “This expansion was a large and complex project, involving many parties and tight deadlines. At Meteor Systems, they understand this, and the timing and coordination were flawless. We also doubled our workforce, so it is very reassuring that we do not have to worry about the materials.”
